Meanwhile, down in
the cellar of The Kit Kat Klub – if that was where the
cellar rooms were, and not even Laszlo could be sure of that – a
depressing silence had settled on the group, since the sudden
disappearance of Martin Elginbrod, not that anyone actually grieved
for him, he had been pretty obnoxious to all of them and Peter Boo
had told them of his own involvement with the prominent Edinburgh
Solicitor and Advocate, the brief to defend Ranulph Ochan'toshan and
his own
incarceration and escape from the Duke of Albany's Palace
dungeon; "well," said Unity Mitford, "if you can
escape from that, shackles and all, you must be able to get us out of
here" but Boo was unconvinced: "I don't know how I did it,"
he said modestly, "I had read a lot about Houdini," which
impressed Roxy, but less so the others, "and I just tried to
take the cuffs by surprise, and to my own surprise, it
worked," which gave rise to some hilarity as they twisted their
own wrists as he had demonstrated and Geli Raubal nodded
encouragement: "maybe you could take the door by surprise, take
hold of the handle and give it a sudden twist, if it's not expecting
that, it may work!" but Peter was unconvinced by her illogical
surmise, until Lorre, his sad moon-face seeming to glow as he thought
about their situation, then spoke his thoughts aloud: "we have
nothing to lose, my Friend, and it might just work, will you try it?"
and the stalwart Peter felt he could hardly refuse, which was how it
came to pass that, in the twinkling of an eye, the door swung open
and they were staring into the
Herren lavatory of the Klub, at
a fat man who, standing under what looked like an erotic frieze, had
been urinating on a young boy, sitting at his feet, and got such a
surprise that he pissed on his
