Sentence
The Fourhundredandninetythird
Teri was weary after
her shift at the Borders General Hospital (in addition to her work as
one of the team of ministers at the Chaplaincy Centre, she was also
on the Nurse Bank, being an RGN –
Registered General Nurse –
providing cover 'as and when' for staff shortages caused by holidays
and sickness) but as always, she opened her mobile and, before
calling her 'hubby' Gerry, or her mum to check on the twins, looked
for messages: no reply from Stacey or Jamie; something had gone wrong
when she had transferred the data from her old phone to the new one,
some contacts, or parts of telephone numbers had disappeared like
distributaries flowing away from a river – in this case into the
ether (the original data had vanished unchecked from the old phone
and only partially appeared in the new one) and gone beyond her own
ability to recover and others were scrambled like broken eggs
in a
bowl – so she had tried using what digits were left and adding
others on at the end: although she had not reached her sister, and
that sister's ex-boyfriend, she had notched up a few new contacts,
like Dave from somewhere 'Down South', but south of where exactly? he
hadn't said, but we are all south of John O'Groats, she thought to
herself and he had hinted that he doubted whether she were real –
'of course I'm real,' she felt like typing in capitals, 'what do you
think I am, a machine?' realising that only some kind of mirabilia
would help and that was most unlikely, for this was surely a case of
a dies horribilis, and she just hoped it wouldn't stretch out
to become a sabbati horribilis!
